Court Threatens To Grant Bail To Alleged Rapist in Enugu

An Enugu State High Court on Thursday threatened to grant bail to one Nonso Mbagu, docked for allegedly committing rape, due to the absence of the state counsel.
Justice Catherine Nwobodo made the threat on the grounds that no state counsel has declared interest in the matter.
At the resumed hearing on Thursday, counsel to the accused, Mr Uchenna Diyoke, told the court that he had finished all that was required for the bail of his client.
“I have filed and served my client’s bail motion to the appropriate quarters. But I wonder why state (prosecution) has not assigned any counsel for this matter.
“It may be that they have no case against him,” Diyoke said.
Mbagu was charged with committing rape, and was detained on July 17, 2013.
The court adjourned the case till Jan. 30 and promised to stand on its threat if there was no state counsel for the matter
