Soldier Arrested For Forcefully Shaving Pastor's Hair In Delta State
A soldier with 3 Battalion, Effurun, Delta state, is now
being held by his command for disciplinary actions after he maltreated a man
unjustly and shaved his hair with razor.
The soldier, one of those stationed to guard a check point
on Alegbor Road, Effurun, had on Monday stopped a tricycle, popularly called
keke, conveying a clergy, who happens to be the General Overseer of Tower of
Faith Ministry, Rev. Felix Omas.
Narrating his ordeal in the hands of the soldiers, Rev. Omas
said when the tricycle conveying him got to the checkpoint, one of the soldiers
asked him to come down, sat him on bare floor and procured a razor with which
he shaved his hair.
He added that he had no choice, especially as his molester
had a gun ready with which he threatened to shoot him.
Omas, who took his case to the Warri Correspondent Chapel of
the Nigerian Union of Journalists, said, “I was driving in my SUV, but due to
the traffic situation, I boarded a tricycle. The soldiers stopped our tricycle
as we were coming from Alegbor, forcibly seated me on the ground as one of them
pulled a scissors and stroke three ugly cuts on my hair, saying my hair style
violates their rules.”
The Nation, however, gathered that the soldier, who molested
the clergy, had since been arrested and detained. It was also gathered that he
would be charged for improper conduct.
Reacting to the development, the National Coordinator,
Centre for the Vulnerable and the Under Privileged, Oghenejabor Ikimi,
described soldiers act as “inhuman and degrading treatment.”
He threatened to sue the army for the action of one of its
men.
“I will take the Army to court to enforce the Pastor’s human
rights. This will serve as deterrent to other gun trotting uniform personnel
who sees civilians as non humans. No security can be done without consideration
for human rights,” he said
