If only D’banj will listen to me… (Open Letter to D'banj)

If only D’banj will listen to me… (Open Letter to D'banj)

Since D’banj’s exit from Mo’hits in 2012, his latest single, ‘Feeling the Nigga’ has been his best creative effort yet (even though he doesn’t agree), sadly he’s taking it for granted.
In his recent interview with Olisa Adibua on ‘The truth’, he said he performed his song, ‘Top Of The World’ at the World Cup in South Africa and it was transmitted live to over two billion people worldwide, so in his books, that’s a hit.

Well, sadly, D’banj you are wrong. In Nigerian parlance, a hit song is any song that ‘Blows.’ For example, Kiss Daniel’s ‘Woju’, Mavins ‘Dorrobucci’, Davido’s ‘Aye’, Lil Kesh’s ‘Shoki’ and others.
So, D’banj, think again and tell me you’ve had a hit song since 2012?
However, ‘Feeling The Nigga’ is it? It’s a mad tune, and almost everything is right on this song, except ‘Promotion’ and ‘Strategy’.
The problem began with a terrible release schedule for the song. D’banj dropped ‘Feeling The Nigga’ on December 5, 2014, he followed up with the video on December 23, 2014, then he dropped the remix featuring Akon on January 2, 2015 and then the video for the remix on February 2, 2015. Common, D’banj how can you waste valuable materials like that all in a space of 7-weeks without having other songs to follow up? It doesn’t work that way.
Listen to me, whoever advised you on that release plan should be fired. Then you released materials in such a quick succession and you are nowhere to be found to promote the songs?
Haba!!!
All you need is to dedicate 3 weeks for a massive radio, TV and club tour and believe me, ‘Feeling the Nigga’ will become a monster hit.
Agreed, the brand D’banj’ transcends just music, but like it or not music is the foundation of the brand and as such it must not suffer. You need to listen to me and devote a lot more time to music and stop messing around.
It’s the year of your 10th anniversary and you’ve not released ONE song (Feeling the nigga dropped in December 2014).
Tonya Merritt is doing a great job with your international branding and your performance at the Global Earth Day event was epic, but you can’t let all that hard work go to waste by not feeding your fans back home.
If only you’ll listen to my unsolicited advice: Get a great team that’ll focus on your business and art; a team that will help you create the right materials and push them with as much passion as an upcomer would. Trust me, online buzz alone will not get you anywhere, you need to be mentally and physically present to push your art and bring back our ‘Kokomaster’.
