Kebbi: Govt faults Speaker’s impeachment
Kebbi State government has reacted to the impeachment of Alhaji Muhammad Shalla as speaker of the state House of Assembly, describing the it as illegal and unconstitutional.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State government, Garba Rabiu Kamba and made available to newsmen , the SSG explained that it was a faction of the members comprising of 12 persons out of 24 members that convened the meeting, knowing fully well that the House was on recess.
He stated that, “the government of Kebbi State was aware that Aminu Musa Habib Jega was removed as Speaker of the House of Assembly on 27th November, 2014 of which they went to Court challenging their removal from Office, asking to court to regard the decision as unconstitutional.”
He said further that, “By this very act the purported members have
pre-empted the decision of the Kebbi State High Court, these members
aimed to cause disaffection and truncate smooth transition of government
following the recent Election.”
The SSG also added that the State Government is awaiting the
judgement of the High Court and as such the action of the members is
illegal and unconstitutional.He said the government will continue to recognise Alhaji Hassan Muhammad Shalla as the State Assembly.
He therefore called on the general public to be law abiding and continue their daily activities.
He said the government has put in place measures to ensure there is no breach of peace while security agencies have been instructed to take proactive measures to maintain law and order as well as securing the peace of the state.
