Kogi Election: Wada Bows To Pressure, Reinstates Sacked Chairmen
Governor Idris Wada
Governor Idris Wada of Kogi state has reinstated
sacked council chairmen, which is in obedience to Court of Appeal ruling
that order for their immediate reinstatement.
The reinstated council bosses were sacked last year by a High Court order.
The removal of the chairmen was challenged by the Conference of
Nigeria Political Parties and dragged the state government to court over
the decision
calling it illegal and improper constitution of the State
Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), Vangaurd reports.
The High Court had declared that the constitution of SIEC and its
actions was ‘ultra vires’ which lead to the sack of the council chiefs.
Not still please with the decision of the High Court, Kogi state
government filed an appeal before Court of Appeal which ruled that
removal of the council chief was illegal and therefore order for their
immediate reinstatement.
In obedience to the ruling, Governor Wada has, however, ordered for
the immediate reinstatement of the council chiefs and councilors on
Tuesday, November 24.
Some of the affected chairmen had already defected to the All
Progressives Congress. The governor statement ordering for the
resumption of duty was silent on the fate of the defectors.
Vanguard reported that one of the reinstated council chiefs,
Folorunsho Daniyan praised the governor for his decision to honour the
court’s judgment.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission on
Monday,November 23 2015 said it would apply available legal provisions
on the recent development over Saturday’s governorship election in Kogi
State.
