Post-UTME: Universities, others defies FG, charge candidates different sums
Inspite of the federal government directive to tertiary institutions in
the country for a stop in conduct of Post-UTME test and levying of
candidates for such, investigation by DailyTimes revealed that some
universities,Polythenic and colleges of education In the country are
still ordering candidates to pay different sum ranging form 5,000, to
10,000.
For the test.
Recalled that the minister of education Adamu Adamu had last week through a circular warned all tertiary institutions to stop the conduct of Post-UTME test and stop the collection of fees related to that, as there was no justification that Post-UTME had help in the improvement of standard of education and quality of students been admitted.
However finding revealed that in a move to justify their action, the institutions have now change the name to Admission screening exercise while special portal and bank account is created for payment and registration.
Finding revealed that a federal university in the south-south zone iis currently collecting money form candidates for the test.
A candidate in one of the a state university in the Eastern part of the country, said she had no choice but to register for the test as the institution was still collecting the money and urging candidates to register.
He said"what would I do?I have to register because I can't lose a year,the minister that gave this order should send his people out to go and check is not just to gave order and sit in abuja there".
Meanwhile a non academic staff in one of the state own university in the south east who are currently charting candidates fees for the test told Dailytimes on the condition of anonymity that the institution have to access the candidates before admitting them,adding that in doing this logistics and personnel would be needed.
He added that the institution was not a federal government owned university were fund were readily available for such exercise.
He said "What we are doing is not post-UTME it is screening. We have to access the student we are admitting everybody know the way JAMB examination is done in this country,but in doing this we need logistic and resources which is why we are charging the candidates the little sum".
Public relation officer (PRO) of one of the state university in the south west who spoke to DailyTimes on the condition of anonymity, said the institution management would meet during the week to arrive at a decision on the issues,but added that only most preferred candidate could register for Test for now as JAMB as not send the list of second choice candidates to the institution.
Meanwhile authorities of the university of benin (UNIBEN)have suspended the Post-UTME test. Several candidates who had arrived at the institution to sit for the test after registering online were asked to re-turn home by the management of the institution.
A candidate simply identified as Joy Omoleyin who spoke to Dailytimes said the management promised to refund back their money,adding they were inform theat the teat had been cancelled
"She said we had register to write the test and the day of my exam have been fixed,but when me and my friend and several other candidates got there we were told to return as the test had been cancelled due to the federal government decision,they promise to refund our money back but we don't know when they would do that"
