UNIOSUN Declares Holiday As Another University Student Dies
The Osun State University was again thrown into mourning on Monday when a
female student of the institution, identified simply as Feyisara, died
after a brief illness.
Some students of the university, who pleaded anonymity, told a Punch correspondent that the deceased was a sickler.
The students, living close to the deceased’s hostel, said Feyisara suffered a crisis and was rushed to a hospital at the Oke Baale area of Osogbo but she gave up the ghost,
The death of the 100 level student of the Anatomy Department was said to have triggered a violent reaction from some students who were said to have complained that the hospital did not attend to Feyisara in time.
However, some other students claimed that the deceased was well attended to by the medical personnel on duty, adding they did their best to save her life.
A student, who was among those who rushed the deceased to the hospital, said the late student was attended to promptly.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said, “The lady that died was a sickle cell patient. She had a crisis and was rushed to the hospital at Oke Baale. Those on duty attended to her but she died. Students were just sad by the development and some burst into tears but nobody attempted to burn the hospital.
“The deceased’s brother, who is a student of Fountain University, also came to the hospital and he saw how his sister was attended to, but it is a pity, she died.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, when contacted, debunked the rumour that the students attempted to set the hospital ablaze.
Odoro stated, “There is no report that the students wanted to set the hospital ablaze but we heard that they were mourning the student who died.”
Meanwhile, the management of UNIOSUN declared a week mid-semester break on Monday.
This came on the heels of the tension generated by the way some policemen opened fire on two of the students on Saturday.
The Acting Registrar of the university, Shittu Gafar, who announced the holiday, said the management consulted with the students’ leadership before the decision was reached.
The statement read, “We thank God for taking full control of the ugly incident of police brutality against our students. The students are responding speedily. We also note the decisive action taken by the security agencies and the assurances to forestall future occurrence.
“To further calm frayed nerves, management and the leadership of our students have agreed that the university should proceed on a one week mid-semester break with effect from Monday, 23, to Friday, January 27, 2017.
“All our students are implored to stay busy with their studies in their respective hostels.”
