Mimiko Allegedly Orders Release Of Arrested Thugs Who Attacked His Deputy
Ondo state Special Anti-Robbery Squad on April 15
reportedly arrested some thugs responsible for the recent attack on Ali
Olanusi, the deputy governor.
Sahara Reporters obtained from the police source who pleaded for anonymity that seven thugs had been detained in a chalet inside the Government House as they were purportedly planning another attack.
Those arrested are mostly known by their street nicknames in Akure: Dada (Alias Bullet), Aperi, Dele Origbe, Asin, Akin Iroko, Opejole, Ojule.
The source added, however, that Governor Olusegun Mimiko forced Isaac Eke, the police commissioner, to release the suspected hoodlums.
It should be recalled that Mimiko and Olanusi have not been in cordial relationship since the latter dumped the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress. Olanusi even alleged that the governor was involved in the assassination attempt.
The police source provided the details of the Wednesday development:
“The thugs were arrested inside the government VIP chalet where they were planning to coordinate another attack on the deputy governor.
“A senior police officer from the SARS department led the team of the officers that effected the arrest of the thugs inside the Government House, VIP chalet. But, unfortunately, they have been released on the direct orders of the governor who put pressure on the state commissioner of police to quickly release them.”
A PDP member yesterday confirmed the arrest to SR saying that the suspects were “Mimiko’s boys”.
“I knew those guys very well, especially the one bearing ‘Aperi.’ They are Mimiko’s boys. Those guys are on the payroll of the governor. They use exotic cars and have big houses inside the Alagbaka GRA based on the sponsorship of the governor.
“One of those guys eliminated the son of a popular Akure union leader.”
One more source confirmed the Wednesday arrest, so as Mimiko’s intervention.
“They were waiting for the governor, when the police van drove inside the governor’s compound and immediately arrested them.”
It is worth noting that some members of the PDP in the state have recently called for the impeachment of the deputy governor for defecting to the APC. Olanusi, on his part, raises alarm over being allegedly targeted by Mimiko’s hoodlums and urges Ondo police to investigate the matter.
